RAF Leuchars is currently home to a squadron of Tornado F3 No.43 Squadron. The squadron operate on a Quick Reaction Alert which was set up primarily to combat threats from Russian attacks during the Cold War. During much of the 1960's the squadron operated from Cyprus and was disbanded in 1967. 43 Squadron reformed at Leuchars in 1969 with the McDonnell Douglas Phantom which flew until its replacement by the Tornado F3 in 1990. Currently the squadron still operates the F3 and will do until the Eurofighter Typhoon replaces the F3s as the UK's operational fighter aircraft. | ![]() 1/72 Scale Tornado F3 ZG757 |
